History
Cedar Ridge High School opened it's doors in the fall of 2010 with freshmen and sophomore students. The theatre department was established under the direction of Kristie Copeland. Our first theatre production season kicked off with Larry Schue's comedy, The Nerd , in which an unexpected house guest arrives and sets the tone for a socially awkward evening for the characters in the play, as well as an entertaining night of theatre for our audiences. In January of 2011, the Visual and Performing Arts Academy presented our first musical production, FOOTLOOSE. The Cedar Ridge musical theatre students impressed audiences with their dynamic voices, energetic choreography and charisma on stage. In our first year to compete in UIL One-Act play competition, our freshmen and sophomore students advanced past their zone and won the opportunity to perform at the district level. Their talents and representation of the Cedar Ridge theatre department that year laid the foundation for our continued success.
Theatre at the Ridge has continued to grow and evolve over the last 10 years. The department strives to give each of our classes an opportunity to perform and showcase for the community and school. Below is a breakout of the different classes and history of productions performed by our department.

Our Musical Theatre classes prepare our students for a musical performance each year generally performed in January. Our performances have been nominated as a "Best Production" and "Best Choreography" every year in the Central Texas musical theatre awards since the beginning of the award program in 2014. Our performances of Ragtime and Legally Blonde have both won this prestigious award. We have won the "Best Choreography" award 6 times and have received multiple other nominations and awards. SHAKESPEARE CLASS
Our Shakespeare students study the works of William Shakespeare throughout the year and prepare a work from Shakespeare that is performed in our outdoor Theatre Courtyard stage in late April.
24 HOUR MUSICAL
Our Opening Knights Theatre Student group started a fundraising event in 2017. The students select, audition, cast, choreograph, rehearse, and tech theatre a mini musical all in 24 hours. Their efforts start on a Friday after school and culminate in a performance for family and friends on Saturday evening. Proceeds are collected at the door and are donated to a designated charity. We have raised $800 for the Theatre Education Fund our first year and over $1300 for Caritas of Austin our 2nd year.
ZOMBIE EXPERIENCE / MUSICAL SHOWCASE
Other performance opportunities for students are presented in our Specialty Programs.
The Zombie Experience is our annual Fundraising event where our Directing Class students direct and plan a Zombie Experience fundraiser each year. In addition, we have held a Musical Showcase (Dinner theatre) show for family and friends giving our musical theatre students an opportunity to perform and entertain.
